C.S. Lewis: Out of the Silent Planet - 1975 Macmillan Paperback Edition

Out of the Silent Planet is the first novel in C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy, following philologist Dr. Elwin Ransom, who is kidnapped to Mars (Malacandra) as a human sacrifice by two scientists.

On the planet, Ransom escapes and discovers a world with three intelligent species and learns that Earth is know as the "silent planet" due to fallen, twisted guardian entities, contrasted with good spirits of other planets.  

The book explores themes of colonialism, morality, and faith through Ransom's adventure and his encounters with the alien cultures, which are more spiritually advanced than humanity's.
