From Sacred Ritual to Permanent Art Form Traditionally, sand painting—or iikááh, meaning "place where the gods come and go"—was never meant to last. For centuries, Navajo medicine men (hataałii) spent hours creating elaborate designs on the dirt floors of ceremonial hogans using crushed sandstone, gypsum, charcoal, and ochres to heal the sick. Once the healing ritual concluded, the painting was deliberately destroyed before sundown to ensure its sacred power wasn't misused. However, around the mid-20th century, pioneering Navajo artists discovered a way to safely translate this temporary, sacred storytelling into permanent fine art. By utilizing natural adhesives on wooden panels, they developed a technique to secure the sand permanently, sharing their rich culture with the wider world while carefully omitting specific ritual details to respect tribal traditions.
